Thuy Mason, MPharm Course Director and Senior Lecturer at Kingston University, as well as teaching on BSc Pharmaceutical Science with Regulatory Affairs and MSc Pharmaceutical Science and finalist for the ‘Education’ award at the 2024 TOPRA Awards for Regulatory Excellence, discusses how the course has evolved and the advice she gives her students to secure a successful career in regulatory affairs.
Q: How did you feel when you were nominated?
I didn’t know I’d been nominated until I received an email from TOPRA so I was rather surprised! I was nominated in two categories and was shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Education’ category, so I was really elated; a mix of excitement and gratitude. It is a truly wonderful feeling that somebody recognised my contribution and went to the trouble of nominating me.
Q: What does this recognition mean to you, both personally and professionally?
Personally, it's a moment of pride and joy. Professionally, wow – what can I say? It's not just any award, it's a TOPRA Award, and it's globally recognised. For me, it's the creme de la creme. I also feel that, on a professional level, it opens doors for further opportunities and collaboration. On the evening of the award ceremony, I met many wonderful individuals who I'm hoping to keep in touch with.
Q: Tell us a bit about your ‘Education’ nomination. Do you think there was one thing in particular that led to your nomination?
I've reflected on my initial journey in the pharma world and realised the importance of practical skills in the industry. This inspired me to integrate elements such as pharmacovigilance, medical information and labelling into our curriculum for the courses that I teach on. I believe that these additions broaden graduates’ skillsets significantly and enhance their job prospects upon graduation. I think my commitment to preparing students for real world practice helped colleagues to realise my contribution and to nominate me for the prestigious TOPRA award.
Q: What would you say to encourage people to nominate their friends and colleagues for the awards?
Nominating peers is a powerful way to recognise and celebrate people's hard work and achievements. It helps inspire and motivate people to strive for excellence. Personally, I feel that it’s a real morale booster. I would definitely encourage everyone to look around and nominate deserving peers and colleagues.
Q: Is there any advice you would give to someone who is aspiring to be shortlisted for such an award in the future?
My advice is to stay true to yourself and focus on making positive impacts on others. If your efforts get recognised, consider that a bonus. Aim to create work that's both impactful and innovative and always think about how your contributions make a difference. Keep your passion for your field alive and let your dedication and authenticity shine through.
